‘HOLISM VS REDUCTIONISM IN MEDICINE'

Most of us have heard of Holistic medicine- but what is it and how does it compare to other approaches in medicine??
Such as Reductionism, ‘Holism’ is an approach in Medicine where any symptom or disease is seen as part of something larger or part of a whole. The whole body, the environment and the interplay between them.

This is the approach that all of us at In Symmetry take with any modality that we practise. Something we don’t do is separate symptoms and deal with them on their own.

We know that to effectively deal with any symptom, disease or pain we must look at the whole person, their body, mind and more to understand how the problem came about and how we could help to correct it. We like to understand the relationship between the many pieces of the puzzle that fits the whole  together, not the one piece on its own.

This is what makes you so unique. The separate parts alone are nothing without the relationship to the whole person.

Other systems of medicine will more commonly practice a process called ‘Reductionism’.
That is when your symptoms will be broken down or indeed reduced down to the smallest possible part and often reduced to that alone.
That part can only be a part of you and will not be studied in relationship to the remaining and very important parts that make up the ‘whole’ person.

Chinese medicine has always seen this relationship very clearly.
The person will always be examined within the paradigm or viewpoint of the environment, the seasons, the food and nourishment we take in and our social and emotional world.
