MOVEMENT IS KEY TO AVOID "DESK DISEASE"

In today's society we are constantly sitting!

On the train to work, in the car, at the office, on the couch, eating meals, the list goes on. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, headaches and poor posture.

Whilst a lot of these activities cannot be avoided there are many things your osteopath can help you with to avoid falling into the dreaded “desk disease” posture.

DO NOT

  • Mouse and keyboard too far away

    1. Computer monitor not at eye level.

    2. Chair height too low.

    3. Phone out of reach

DO

  • Mouse in reach with elbow by your side

    1. Keyboard in reach with elbows by side.

    2. Phone within easy reach

    3. Chair height allows legs to sit comfortably underneath the desk with the knees angled sightly down from the hips

One of the most useful things you can do is take regular breaks as much as possible. This might mean going to the printer, toilet breaks, coffee/water breaks or just spending a few minutes turned away from the screen to stretch. Sit to stand desk are another item that is helping combat this issue. Whilst we aren’t meant to sit or stand for extended periods of time having to option between the two is a great way to switch up the posture.
