WHY DO MEN GO TO AN ACUPUNCTURIST?

Written by Chris Eddy - Chinese Medicine Practitioner

I have been specializing in men's health for over 15 years now, and you might be surprised by the many reasons men come to see an acupuncturist.

The most common issue I treat in men is pain. And the most common complaint in pain, is lower back pain, specifically L5-S1 lumbar vertebrae and/or disc related pain. It did take me 12 years to get good at treating this, especially when that exact location in myself blew out 6 years ago, I could hardly walk and barely work. But, that is a story for another time. (I have no pain now, by the way!).

The other pain conditions that I commonly treat (that acupuncture works beautifully to treat) are; neck, shoulder, knee and wrist pain.

A more uncommon complaint that I treat often is "prostadynia" also called "prostatitis" or "Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome". This is a condition in men, that causes constant pain in the groin and perineum, that doesn't go away with rest or antibiotics. It can be worse with ejaculation and cold weather. I have been treating this successfully for the past 10 years.

Other conditions that I treat weekly in my clinic are: erectile dysfunction, male infertility (low sperm count, motility, morphology and anti-sperm antibodies), Peyronie's (bent penis) and low libido.

Of course I treat general conditions from tinnitus to tinea, but these are the main men's health issues that I see.

If you’re interested, please feel free to contact me, I am easy to talk to and I see this issue frequently in clinic.

On a final note, men's mental health is very important to me.

Men often feel shy or even ashamed to talk about their mental health. This may be due to conditioning, toxic masculinity, perceived or real pressure or, they're just not used to talking about feelings and emotions because they didn't grow up in that environment.

I am not a counselor or psychologist, so I'm not the one to work out anyone's problems. However, I am here to listen, provide next-step direction, and support your mind and body through acupuncture. Can acupuncture help with depression and PTSD? I have seen it work wonders. In fact I have worked with numerous survivors of Victoria's brutal King lake fires, and seen dramatic and positive changes over time from ear acupuncture alone. The best part of this therapy is, you don't need to talk to me about your problems, or re-live them or even have a cathartic (breakdown) event to get a positive shift. It just happens naturally in its own time.

If you are interested or you are reading this and have a brother, husband, partner or friend who you think needs help, please give the clinic a call.
