Have you heard about Infrared Saunas and been wondering how they could benefit you or whether they are worth adding to your routine?Read on to discover the top reasons infrared saunas are becoming a well-loved part of self-care practices everywhere.

But first…What exactly is Far Infrared sauna technology and how does it work in the sauna?

Infrared heat is one part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It occurs naturally as the non-harmful component of the sun's radiation. Unlike harmful UV radiation, infrared heat is safe.
Within infrared, there are near, mid and far-infrared wavelengths. Infrared saunas employ Far infrared, also known as FIR. Far infrared is the longest wavelength which penetrates the fat cells causing vasodilation, where the fat cells vibrate to expel toxins, resulting in the greatest levels of detoxification and stimulate your metabolism to aid in weight-loss.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the behind the scenes, let’s get to the good stuff…

A deeper sweat without the extreme heat!
When you think of a sauna do you think of sitting around in towels, in a steamy room? Well, thankfully for those of us who may have found the old-style saunas a bit claustrophobic, the infrared version provides the same sweat without the steam and super high temperatures.
The infrared panels easily penetrate the body’s tissues which means you heat up well before the air does, allowing for lower, more tolerable temperatures but a more intense sweat all over.

Promotion of pain relief
In many of the studies performed to determine the effect of infrared sauna use on pain management (including one by NASA) it was found that the sauna sessions helped reduce inflammation, increased joint mobility and reduced swelling. (The far and mid-infrared wavelength provides natural pain relief by helping with inflammation and swelling. While the near infrared penetrates surface tissue to assist with cellular repair).
Regular sessions were found to be helpful for pain management in acute and chronic cases as well as for muscle recovery after exercise.

Weight loss
For each 30-minute session in the sauna, you burn 300 calories!
In a study performed in 2001 by Dr Masakazu Imamura, it was determined that: ‘During a sauna weight loss session, core temperatures increase. The body has to work hard to cool itself, causing a healthy sweat. Using an infrared sauna increases heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. This helps burn more calories.’

It can be likened to a moderate exercise session but is more accessible to people who are unable to attend high impact/intensity exercise classes. It can also be added into an existing exercise routine for extra help with weight loss and the combined benefit of muscle recovery after a workout.

Relaxation
Besides being able to unwind and switch off for 45 minutes in your sauna appointment, there are other factors that contribute to the relaxing feelings you may experience during and after your session.
Infrared heat occurs naturally as the warmth we feel from the sun, it is a wavelength you would experience as gentle, penetrating warmth.
After your session you will most likely feel the same kind of relaxation that you would after laying out in the sun. The other benefit of our sauna is that it is a solo sauna, you go in by yourself and you lay down during the session making it the perfect stress-free experience. You can also choose to meditate during your session taking it to the next level.

Skin rejuvenation
Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of elimination in the body?
Sweating is a great way to eliminate toxins picked up while out and about in the world as well as clearing the pores of the skin and removing dead skin cells but not all sweat is created equal!
As sweat and oils are secreted, the toxins dissolved in them are secreted as well. Dr. Aundrea Adams of the International Institute of Holistic Healing compared the detoxification findings of FIR and steam saunas. She found that sweat generated using a steam sauna was composed of up to 97% water while sweat released after FIR sauna therapy was composed of only 80-85% water. The remaining 15-20% of sweat was composed of heavy metals, sulfuric acid, sodium, ammonia, uric acid and fat- soluble toxins. *Added side benefits of the oils and sweat being secreted is that it’s de-clogging your pores, reducing the instance of pimples and blackheads and can help to reduce acne.  Plus, the added blood circulation may help your skin to produce more collagen. It’s a win-win!
