GLUTEN – WHY YOU NEED TO BE PICKY ABOUT WHAT GLUTEN CONTAINING PRODUCTS YOU EAT

Written by Sarah Conte (Naturopath)

Oh Gluten you are always in the headlines…… why choosing the right source if GLUTEN is imperative for your GUT health!!

First up – poor sources of gluten include:

  • Wheat based bread

  • Wheat bases pasta

  • Most baked goods – cakes, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, muffins, pancakes

  • Snacks like granola bars

  • Wheat based cereals

How gluten may be effecting your health, you may have: ⠀⠀

  • Eczema⠀⠀⠀

  • Asthma⠀⠀⠀

  • Psoriasis

  • Thyroid issues / Hashimoto’s⠀⠀⠀

  • Crohns

  • ANY GUT ISSUES – bloating, abdominal pain, loose stool, parasites, SIBO

  • ANY AUTOIMMUNE diagnosis

  • Anxiety, fatigue

  • Any connective tissue issues, fibromyalgia, joint pain or injuries

So what is so bad about gluten and what the hell can you eat?

Gluten containing foods as suggested, contain a molecule called GLIADIN and HIGH AMOUNTS OF IT, this protein plays a part in negatively increasing the spaces between your gastrointestinal lining wall, and leaves it open, which allows negative pathogens to get into circulation, triggering an immune response and doing things like increasing your antibody response and this is a huge problem for someone with an autoimmune condition because your total antibody pool is increasing….. and honestly this is just a snippet of a mind map of why eating poor quality gluten can really be the driver of some debilitating diseases.

SO what is the solution?

  • Book in to see me if you are suffering from any of the conditions above. Its best to stop all gluten until your gut is repaired.

  • If you choose to eat wheat, look for fresh, unprocessed, or sprouted forms. Stone-ground fresh wheat that is fermented tends to be higher in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals as well and contain smaller doses of gliadin! Some great sources include: - Authentic Sourdough, Buckwheat, Semolina, Rye & Spelt

Your gut health is so important to your quality of life!
