SACROILIAC DYSFUNCTION, ONE WAY TO RUIN YOUR CHRISTMAS
Written by Daniel Shaw (Myotherapy / Remedial Massage)
Christmas in Australia is a time that everyone looks forward to!
Sunshine, holidays, beach weather, no more desk.
To make sure we can make the most of our holidays we need to make sure that our body doesn’t try to lock back into the desk job when we want to be up and about!
Have you ever been looking forward to an afternoon with friends, only to start feeling stiff or the “need” to sit down only 30 minutes in?
Don’t let your lower back and hips hold you back from an amazing holiday!!
Pain that is felt in between the hip, lower back, pelvis or thigh, may be as a result of Sacro Iliac (SI) dysfunction.
Primary problems are:
– Ligament sprains
– Friction between articular surfaces
– Joint misalignment
The Sacrum is wedge between the two ½ s of the pelvis, holding the weight of the upper body. As such, there are large compressive forces on the joint that force the sacrum in an downwards direction. The sacrum is held firmly into this joint by a tight webbing of ligamentous structures. When we are sitting throughout the day we also lock the hips into position causing immobility and discomfort when we eventually want to go out and about to catch up with friends and enjoy the weather!
The muscles which cause SI dysfunction can refer pain centered in the LB or SI region and may also refer into the groin or posterior leg.
Try some of the following exercises to open up the hips and get your body moving to last through the family BBQ!
