THE KEY TO SUCCESS - THE 20 MILE MARCH

Written by Hannah Sutton - Chinese Medicine Practitioner

Ever heard of the 20 Mile March?  This is a fantastic concept that can be applied to any goal you want to set your sights on & will make you unstoppable!

This is a concept that author Jim Collins writes about in his book “Great by Choice”. The 20 Mile March refers to a race to the South Pole by two groups of explorers in 1911. Despite the two teams being evenly matched in equipment, skills & experiences, one team succeeded in their mission, whereas the other paid with their life.  So, what made the difference between success & failure?

One team’s strategy was to complete a 20-mile march every day, no matter what. They stuck with their plan and marched their 20 miles, in any weather and under any circumstances.

The other team used a strategy where they took advantage of good weather – they marched as much as they could on these days, which was anywhere from 40 to 60 miles. However, when the weather was bad, they stayed put and rested in their tents.

So, who do you think succeeded? Like the age-old fable of the tortoise & the hare - slow & steady wins the race. The moral of the story is to be disciplined & consistent, and you WILL reach your destination faster and in far better condition (both physically & mentally!).

On the other side of the scale - there is no free ride. Stop looking for short cuts and quick fixes!!  Anything worth striving for will take hard work and dedication. The key is to have a plan, set achievable goals, play to your strengths, believe in yourself, and don’t forget to factor in time for self-care & family.

This concept can be applied to anything you are wanting to achieve in life, big or small.  The most important thing to remember is SHOW UP, do your 20 miles. Push through on the tough days and on the easy days, still do your 20 miles. And never, ever give up.
