IS ACUPUNCTURE PAINFUL?

Written by Vanessa Manion (Chinese Medicine Practitioner)

"Is acupuncture painful?" is a common question among patients who are new to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This question often arises from those with apprehensions about needles. It is essential to understand that the sensation of acupuncture needles is quite different than those used for medical treatments. Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin, typically measuring just 0.22mm in thickness. This is significantly thinner than the needles employed in medical procedures, as a result any discomfort experienced during acupuncture is minimal and short-lived. We also prioritize the use of high-quality needles, which have smoother tips, further minimizing discomfort.

So, what can you expect to feel during an acupuncture treatment?

The answer to this question varies from person to person because each acupuncture treatment is tailored to the individual's needs. Factors such as a patient's constitution, specific condition, and the acupuncture points chosen can influence the sensations experienced.

In general, patients tend to be more aware of the guide tube touching their skin than the actual insertion of the needle. The sensation of "De Qi," which is felt around the needle once it is in position, is often described as a heaviness, tingling, or spreading sensation. Some patients may even feel sensations in areas of the body far from where the needles are inserted. On the other hand, some patients may not feel strong sensations at all. This is not a problem, as the acupuncturist can sense the De Qi on their end of the needle, indicating that the treatment is still effective.

In certain situations, like when releasing a tight muscle, there may be a momentary muscle flick or "jump," which can be a stronger sensation. However, this discomfort is brief, and the relief that follows is well worth it. Our practitioners are highly trained and skilled in using techniques that minimize discomfort while maximizing clinical effectiveness. They will maintain open communication with you throughout the entire treatment to ensure your comfort and well-being. Your comfort is a top priority during acupuncture sessions.
