ACUPUNCTURE - IS IT GOING TO HURT?

One of the most frequently asked questions by new patients to acupuncture is ‘is this going to hurt?’. Many of us are traumatised by the word ‘needle’, with the discomfort of vaccinations and blood tests that have not gone to plan lingering in our memories. Fear not, the acupuncture needle sensation is nothing like that!

Acupuncture needles are thin. So very thin. In fact, the average acupuncture needle used in our clinic is only 0.22mm thick, as shown in this awesome comparison graphic from China Books. As a result, any discomfort experienced is minimal and transient.

We also use great quality needles. Smoother tips = less discomfort.

So…what will I feel?

This is a hard question to fully answer. Each patient’s experience with acupuncture is unique, as each treatment is tailored to the individual. Patient constitution and presentation, in combination with the different points selected can elicit different strengths and qualities in terms of sensations.

In general, there is more awareness felt from the guide tube that is used against the skin than the actual needle insertion. The qi sensation, or ‘De Qi’, felt around the needle when it is in position can usually be described as a heaviness, tingling or spreading sensation. Some patients will feel sensations in areas far from where the needles are in the body. In contrast, there are some patients that do not feel anything strongly at all. This is not an issue, as the acupuncturist will feel the De Qi on their end of the needle when it is in position and the treatment will still be having an effect. In some instances where a tight muscle needs to be released there can be a muscle flick or ‘jump’ which is a stronger sensation, however this is only momentary and the relief felt afterwards is worth it!

Our practitioners are trained well and are mindful with their techniques to minimise any discomfort while maximising clinical efficacy and will keep communicating with you during the whole treatment to ensure that you are feeling comfortable and cared for.
